Comfortable Writing Space

Where do you write and when?
I like to write in an open area that is relatively uncluttered. Anything out of place distracts and bothers me and keeps me from getting into the "zone."
Coffee shops, though cliche, work great for me! There s nothing to distract me and I can focus! Plus, there is something magical about the aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee!
Another thing that usually ends in failure to launch for me is trying to write lying down, like on my bed, because I get way too comfortable and kind of start to doze off, or at least get tired...
I am a major night owl and prefer to write at night, when everyone else is in bed and everything is QUIET! (Which RARELY happens when you have 4 small children!)
Plus, it helps to have a buddy to write with- that way you don't feel like you are missing out on something! My wife likes to write as well, she actually got me into writing, so that works well. Plus, I am always looking for friends to meet at a coffee shop to write with... makes it FUN!

As for when? For me, writing is kind of a reward for myself, something to look forward to... I haven't gotten to the point where I have a really disciplined time-schedule yet; I am just writing for fun. If I ever am able to write for a living, which is every writer's dream, I will HAPPILY put myself on a more regimented schedule. Actually, one of my new year's resolutions is to get more disciplined with my writing...
How about YOU? Where and when do you write?

I'm kind of the opposite, I would rather write in a small, cluttered space like my bedroom. Or my deck at my parents house. Large open spaces literally space me out, I'd rather have my thoughts be able to bounce off walls that aren't too far apart, like a pinball machine. I do really enjoy writing on my bed, in some weird crouched position. I do all my homework/reading on my bed and it seems to be a place where my thoughts can flow easily. Plus, I really like sitting with my legs crossed which is difficult to do on a chair because they are too long! I'm now realizing, on my way home from Philadelphia, that I don't like writing on trains. I should have figured that with my extensive history of car-sickness. As for when, it's whenever I have free time, which is more than you would expect for a college student. When I get started on a project, I can stay pretty committed to it and write often. But sometimes my writings tend to be spaced out because I get so preoccupied by other things in-between. :)

In my perfect world, I would write for hours and hours in complete silence. In my current world, with four small children, I find small pockets of time to write when my two oldest are at school and the other two are asleep.
Really, with a newborn and a two year old, finding any time to write is a major accomplishment, but I am trying to make it work.
In my perfect world, I would write in a yellow wing back chair in the library of my Victorian home. In reality, today I found myself lying on the floor so I could keep an eye on the baby while I worked.
I remember reading an article about Jodi Piccoult, one of my favorite authors, who also is a mother. She described writing in the car while she was waiting to pick up her kids, at the doctors office, etc. She was able to make writing fit into her work as a Mom and I really admired her for that.
